Young Guns: Jorjha Unwin Vickery at oOh!media

Jorjha Unwin

In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it’s oOh!media’s Senior Business Manager, Jorjha Unwin Vickery.

Time in current role/time at the company:

Five months in my current role. Coming up on five years at oOh!media.

How long have you been in the industry?

Five years, all in Out of Home. I joined during COVID and watched the channel rebuild itself in real time.

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?

Not at all. I was a travel consultant at Flight Centre while studying PR. When COVID shut travel down, my career pivoted into Out of Home sales. I’ve found the perfect mix of creativity and commercial thinking.

Who is your right hand person/who guides you day to day?

There are so many incredible people who help guide me each and every day. My campaign executives past and present; they’re the engine room behind everything I do, and my Queensland Leadership Team who give me the freedom to make mistakes and grow. A shout out to Megs in our trade team as well, she reviews nearly every response I send out to market and never fails to provide a fresh idea or angle to help inspire my pitch.

What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?

Seeing your work out in the world never gets old, but I also love the craft behind it. The art and science of building a high-reaching schedule, layered in insights, and then pulling it all together into a story you can confidently stand behind.

And the biggest challenge?

We’re in an industry that’s constantly asking for more proof. Data is essential, but sometimes the hardest part is getting brands to feel confident about the choice of bringing to life bold ideas when the metrics don’t tell the full story.

Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?

I don’t see a limit for my ambition. Who knows, I may very well come for James Taylor’s role as CEO of oOh!media one day but in the meantime I’m preparing to move from Brisbane to the big smoke (Sydney) to work with the incredible oOh!media agency sales team there, and continue doing what I love doing!

Where do you turn for inspiration?

I love films, podcasts and comedy shows, anything that helps explain why people behave the way they do.

My favourite advert is (and why):

I may be biased, as RACQ is one of my clients, but I still quote ‘What Charter Boat?’ with my friends to this day.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

I’m a classic over sharer, but I love surprising people with the knowledge that I was born in Hong Kong. It doesn’t come up much in Out of Home conversations though hahaha.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

Helping shape strategy at a national level, mentoring younger talent and championing braver brand-building in Out of Home.
